Tourism is incredibly important to the Maltese economy, with it being one of the main drivers of GDP. Following on from the success of Valletta European Capital of Culture 2018, Malta continued to invest in new cultural events and the restoration and redevelopment of areas across the islands in 2019.
Following the first recorded case on 7 March 2020, the Prime Minister announced the closure of schools, day centres for the elderly, a cessation of religious events as well as football games and political activities from 12 March. On 17 March all bars, restaurants, hotels, gyms, casinos, cinemas and bingo halls closed.
Airlines experienced a steep decline in value sales in 2020 as every airline flying from Malta cancelled their operations. The only exception was Air Malta, which set up “lifeline” flights to London, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

A key driver behind this growth was the rapid development of peer to peer service providers, in particular Airbnb, with these enabling individuals to rent accommodation directly to tourists.
