Tourism struggled in Mozambique at the beginning of the review period, amidst instability, kidnappings and clashes between local factions, as well as a resurgence of RENAMO (Mozambique National Resistance). However, the situation began to improve after a truce with RENAMO at the end of 2016, which improved both traveller and investor confidence in the country as a tourist destination.
In March 2020, the government imposed a nationwide 30-day lockdown which was extended by a further 30 days on 1 April to stem the spread of COVID-19. The country’s borders were closed and all sports and cultural activities were suspended.
The airlines industry in Mozambique suffered a significant blow due to the onset of COVID-19 in 2020 seeing sales contract as the country closed its borders for several months in a bid to halt the spread of the virus. While there was a slight easing of restrictions in August for businesses, leisure travel remained banned with leisure tourists only finally being permitted into the country from November 2020.
In 2019, direct online sales remained the most popular among consumers seeking the personal touch and advice when travelling to new countries. As such, the majority of bookings were carried out through website traffic in partnership with tour operators.
After an initial strong bounce back in 2021 and 2022, growth rates in tourist numbers are expected to slow and return to more normal levels towards the end of the forecast period. The widespread devastation of COVID-19 in traveller source markets is set to have an impact on Mozambique as it is not as popular a leisure destination as some of its competitors, such as South Africa and Kenya.
