In 2015 tourism authorities, mainly represented by INTUR, continued to invest in promoting Nicaragua as a tourism destination. INTUR launched a new marketing campaign which it implemented internationally with the assistance of the country’s embassies and consulate offices abroad. At a local level, INTUR also continued to focus on domestic tourism with local promotion and advertising. With this and other activities and with a large investment in the market, the country recorded growth in travel.
Online performance remained incipient in 2015, although it is expected to grow in importance over the forecast period. Many companies working in the tourism market have some online presence, especially international players. Social media has become more relevant, especially as companies aim to attract a broader audience.
In 2015 the new Costa Esmeralda International Airport was opened. The project, which is primarily managed by the private sector, opens possibilities for the growth of high-end tourism. Many of the tourists traveling to this airport are interested in visiting and staying in the Guacalito de La Isla Golf Resort. This is a luxurious complex which attracts tourists who are able to spend more than the typical tourists who currently visit the country.
In the search for new arrival sources, various players in the tourism market constantly attempt to innovate and attract tourists. Sustainability could prove to be a successful way of attracting new customers, and Soppexcca is a good example of this. The agro-cooperative, located in Jinotega, aims to attract tourists with the opportunity of learning first-hand about coffee plantations and tasting. The cooperative has gained the “Local Label” certification, accrediting its tourist offer as sustainable and opening opportunities for travellers interested in this type of activity.
As investment in tourism continues to increase, growth is expected to be strong over the forecast period. Incentives created by the government to increase investment in tourism have yielded positive results, creating the necessary infrastructure to support future growth in the market.
