The initial impact of COVID-19 in Pakistan began at the start of 2020 as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), cancelled all flights between Pakistan and China for most of January. By March government-enforced restrictions began as Pakistan’s borders were closed and flights were grounded.
After COVID-19 arrived in Pakistan in late February 2020, the government implemented lockdowns across the country in March, with retail and business closures, travel restrictions and the population asked to stay at home, where possible. The Prime Minister Imran Khan officially ended the lockdown on 9 May, citing economic concerns as the primary reason for this decision, rather than having brought the outbreak of the virus fully under control.
COVID-19 has had a severe impact on flights in Pakistan, impacting all airlines. Pakistan International Airlines, Pakistan’s national carrier with the largest share of flights, ceased all flights between China and Pakistan for most of January 2020 and nearly all international flights from mid-March until at least July, with some only resuming in August.
In 2020, online booking portals such as Booking.com and Expedia remain largely unchanged and available to consumers, although greater levels of flexibility in terms of booking modifications or cancellations were offered to consumers, often at the expense of operators.
Like most other travel markets, travel in Pakistan is expected to be severely impacted by COVID-19 in 2020 and beyond. Moreover, many travel companies in Pakistan will suffer from the long-term effects of low demand, impacting lodging and attractions the most and travel intermediaries and airlines to a lesser extent.
