COVID-19 will have a heavy detrimental impact on travel in Qatar in 2020. From 22 March, the strict government restrictions, border closures and partial lockdown led to a sharp drop in inbound tourist flows and forced consumers to remain at home except for essential travel.
With the exception of the military, security services and the health sector, from 22 March, Qatar only allowed 20% of employees in the public sector space to work, encouraging people to stay at home with a partial lockdown. This lockdown discouraged all non-essential movement, with police patrol vehicles ensuring that no car was carrying more than two people without a good reason.
COVID-19 grounded non-essential flights for the first half of 2020, as inbound tourist flows plummeted and airline companies saw steep revenue losses. This high number of flight cancellations caused tourists to alter their travel plans.
COVID-19 will cause significant damage to travel intermediaries in 2020 due to the plummet in inbound tourist numbers and restrictions of movement within the country. Uncertainty about the future is also holding back recovery in the industry and preventing people from making bookings.
Just like in countries around the world, travel in Qatar will be hit hard by COVID-19 in 2020 and beyond. All areas of travel will be affected by the pandemic, with low demand, reduced disposable incomes and fears over the safety of travelling likely to lead to a slow recovery for tourism and travel in Qatar.
