Country Report

Executive Summary

Aug 2016
Seychelles focuses its efforts on China as an emerging tourist market

The Republic of Seychelles, a small island nation in the West Indian Ocean, has targeted China as the most promising source for tourism. Despite a slowdown in economic growth, China continues to lead the world economy. Arrivals from China is growing rapidly, but the Seychelles is less known to the Chinese than other popular destinations such as Mauritius and the Maldives. Strong growth in this important market with the high purchasing power of its residents has attracted the attention of the Seychelles.

Performance of the country’s tourism industry attracts new luxury hotels investments

The excellent performance of the Seychelles tourism industry with its well-preserved natural and marine heritage continues to attract major hotels chains, such as Six Senses and Hilton, to invest in new projects within the country. There is a new dynamic between these luxury hotels and contact with breath-taking landscapes.

Air Seychelles is a key player in tourism development

The Seychelles is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. The national airlines carrier, Air Seychelles, has invested significantly to increase its fleet, as well as creating important links to European and Asian countries. In addition, Air Seychelles continues to establish important partnerships with major international airlines such as Etihad Airways. This initiative has generated a new dynamic in the tourism industry.

“Luxury within reach” is the slogan of the new international campaign

Tourism is the main pillar of the Seychelles’ economy. The country has successfully traversed through the world recession thanks to the economic reforms implemented by the Seychelles government, resulting in a thriving tourism industry and a flourishing economy. In addition, the Seychelles has also implemented some changes in terms of external promotion, which has resulted in a change of message for potential visitors. For a long time, the Seychelles was seen as a holiday destination for the rich and the famous, but now there are products for every budget, which is promoted under the slogan “luxury within reach”.

Government, private sector and the island’s community ensure tourism sustainability

The island nation, which is situated in the Indian Ocean, east of the African coast and northeast of Madagascar, is known for its white sandy beaches, turquoise sea water and unique, well-preserved environment. The Seychelles is one of the best examples of sustainable island tourism in the world, from an ecological and social perspective. The government, the private sector and the island’s community have worked together to conserve more than 50% of the terrestrial environment, as well as protecting the marine environment on which its tourism industry depends.
