The initial impact of COVID-19 in Slovenia started at the beginning of March with the closure of bars and restaurants. As the situation in Italy was critical compared with the rest of Europe, the Slovenian government banned all travel with Italy.
The Slovenian government closed all restaurants and bars on 16 March, followed, two days later, by the suspension of all passenger bus and train travel with Italy, as well as calling a halt to air travel and shutting the smaller border posts with Austria and Croatia, with the larger ones remaining open, but with strict regulations in place: a negative coronavirus test less than three days old or agreeing to a health check.
Prior to COVID-19, the largest airline company in Slovenia, Adria Airways filed for bankruptcy and ceased to run. This was set to impact airlines in Slovenia, with there being a huge gap in the segment, which would have been beneficial for low-cost airlines.
Despite the outbreak of the virus and implementation lockdown, online booking portals have remained largely unchanged and, in some instances, have seen an increase in customers as it has been the only option to book a holiday. In contrast, the impact on traditional intermediaries has been more serious, as in-store travel agencies were forced to close in March.
The overall travel industry is expected to take at least three years to recover. From the middle of 2020, frequent flights began, and hotels and car rentals started to reopen, however under very strict regulations and capacity limits.
