Country Report

Executive Summary

Sep 2019
Leading Asian markets are being tapped for more premium stays, while major terrorist attack shocks the country

Following the end of religious tensions in 2009, Sri Lanka has witnessed healthy growth in inbound arrivals in recent years. The island nation’s rich biodiversity, pristine beaches, wildlife and cultural attractions appeal to tourists from across the world.

Online sales are on the rise

Sri Lankan tourism is still mostly driven by offline channels, with a large percentage of package holidays, hotels and airline tickets being booked through trusted brick-and-mortar tour operators. However, online bookings are picking up, especially in hotels and airlines.

Sri Lanka has luxury travellers in its sights

Airlines and hotels in Sri Lanka have both benefited greatly from strong growth in inbound arrivals in recent years. National carrier SriLankan Airlines, the largest airline in the country, has repositioned itself as a regional airline with a strong focus on Asian nations, which are the source of a large proportion of inbound arrivals.

More travellers make themselves at home

An important trend in the Sri Lankan travel market is the expansion of short-term rentals, which are also known as homestays in the country. Listed on websites such as Booking.

Sri Lanka exploits destination niches to realise its Vision

Under its Tourism Vision 2025 plan, the government aims to attract five million tourists to Sri Lanka annually by 2025. To achieve this goal, it is focusing on positioning the country as a luxury travel destination.
