COVID-19 disrupted the recovery of travel in Tunisia following terrorist attacks in 2015 and several recent incidents, which negatively affected the inflow of tourists. It is still difficult to accurately gauge the extent of COVID-19’s impact on the number of arrivals to Tunisia, as returning nationals were stamped into the country in the same way as foreign tourists.
Tunisia was an early mover in terms of introducing measures to track the COVID-19 virus, installing thermal cameras in all the country's ports and airports in February. In spite of a change of government during February, the new administration continued the country’s preparations to combat the spread of the virus.
Airlines in Tunisia were already disadvantaged by the Open Skies agreement, which boosted the share of low-cost European carriers. The suspension of international travel due to COVID-19 saw Tunisia’s airlines ground their fleets, while a much smaller number of flights than unusual entered the country once international travel resumed on 27 June.
In 2019 and 2020, the proportion of online sales for travel intermediaries in Tunisia remained very low in comparison to offline value sales. However, COVID-19 had a far less damaging effect on online travel intermediaries.
In the latter half of 2020, travel in Tunisia will begin a gradual recovery, thanks to the return of some tourists. However, the process will be complicated by the need for a dual recovery: from ongoing damage to Tunisia’s reputation due to terrorism, as well as the shock of COVID-19.
