Even during the review period prior to the onset of the pandemic, there had been strong growth in retail current value sales of vacuum cleaners. Nonetheless, the rate of growth accelerated in 2020, as the pandemic made some local consumers more conscious of keeping their homes clean, particularly as they were spending more time there due to lockdown measures.
Convenience is a key growth driver for vacuum cleaners, and more portable models are growing in popularity. In addition, the use of stick vacuum cleaners is on the rise, allowing consumers to take the appliance to any location in the home without having to worry about a power cord.
The competitive landscape in vacuum cleaners is highly fragmented, with the top ten players all having a retail volume share of between 4% and 7%. Black+Decker is the leading brand, closely followed by two local brands – Kitfort AOA’s eponymous brand and Golder Electronics’ Vitek.
The rate of growth in retail current value sales of vacuum cleaners will slow significantly during 2022 and remain no more than moderate for the remainder of the forecast period. Demand for vacuum cleaners is extremely mature, with cylinder vacuum cleaners having a penetration rate well in excess of 100% in 2021.
Having declined during the review period, the unit price of vacuum cleaners is set to increase during the forecast period due to rising raw material and shipping costs. This will put additional downward pressure on retail current value sales growth.
Robotic vacuum cleaners will remain the top performer in terms of their rate of retail current value sales growth. While the stellar performance of 2020 and 2021 is obviously unsustainable, retail current value sales will continue to expand at a double-digit rate.
