Variety stores saw a return to growth in 2021, offsetting the decline in value sales seen in 2020. Outlets in the neighbourhood of high-traffic locations and with a focus on packaged food and home care managed to maintain their high sales even during lockdowns and periods of outlet closures, as shops mainly selling food, personal care and home care products were not forced to close when outlets selling less essential items were.

However, it rebranded all its outlets, and a new, more contemporary design was launched under the Ecofamily brand name, to symbolise and focus the direction in which it wants the brand to go.
