Variety stores saw a return to growth in 2021, offsetting the decline in value sales seen in 2020. Outlets in the neighbourhood of high-traffic locations and with a focus on packaged food and home care managed to maintain their high sales even during lockdowns and periods of outlet closures, as shops mainly selling food, personal care and home care products were not forced to close when outlets selling less essential items were.
Despite outlet closures in 2020, some smaller independent players managed to survive the first year of the pandemic. However, 2021 brought more lockdowns, limitations on movement and further concentration towards one-stop shopping at modern grocery retailers.
In 2020, Napcsillag Kft, the leading player in variety stores, ran the Euro Family chain, which was also the leading chained brand within the channel. However, it rebranded all its outlets, and a new, more contemporary design was launched under the Ecofamily brand name, to symbolise and focus the direction in which it wants the brand to go.
The recovery of variety stores over the forecast period is likely to be strongly dependent upon how quickly Hungary rebounds from the pandemic. Regardless, continuing a long-term trend, the number of variety stores is set to decline further in the forecast period.
Nevertheless, in current value terms variety stores is set to see strong but slowing growth throughout the forecast period, although differences between outlets and brands are likely to continue. Variety stores – as the name suggests – offer a wide range of products, making the channel fragmented.
Variety stores is a small retail channel and is not highly attractive to retailers, especially chained retailers. Operators are likely to be more careful in opening new outlets due to the continued uncertainty during the pandemic.
