Variety stores witnessed a partial recovery in terms of value sales in 2021 after the steep decline witnessed in 2020. This was a result of the increase in footfall seen in variety stores as COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and people returned to city centres, along with the stronger sales seen during the Christmas period when compared to the restriction-hit Christmas of 2020.
One trend that was interesting to follow in 2021 was the development, or lack of, in the online offer being provided by key variety store players in the Czech Republic. Action, which only entered the variety stores channel in 2020, operates e-commerce services in addition to running its 13 outlets.
New players Action and Tedi continued to open outlets in 2021 despite restrictive lockdown rules being in place for many retailers in the Czech Republic during the early part of the year. The most popular location to open variety stores remains retail parks.
In-store sales are predicted to reach 2019 levels by 2022 as the COVID-19 situation improves and more consumers start returning to store-based retailers. With restrictions eased and the majority of the population fully vaccinated it is expected that consumer confidence will return.
Sustainable growth and expansion for variety stores could be realised through franchise or alliance networks. Franchising has been a very successful strategy for convenience stores, a channel that has historically been very fragmented.
The number of variety stores outlets is expected to decline over the forecast period, with this being largely due to independent players accounting for the majority of outlets and value sales in the channel. Independent operators are increasingly exiting the category as they are unable to compete with the growing competition from retail chains and e-commerce, with players like AliExpress and Wish offering cheap everyday items.
