Despite the opposition of the public health community, the Trump administration plans to take tobacco control away from the responsibility of the FDA and create a new specific agency for tobacco and its impact on public health.
The FDA has recently been under scrutiny after the outbreak of the vaping crisis in the US, and this decision would allow the FDA to focus on its traditional mission of ensuring the safety of food and medical products supply, whereas the new agency would have greater capacity to respond to the growing complexity of new tobacco products.
The FDA issued a rule to require new health warnings on cigarette packages and cigarette advertisements in March 2020. Beginning in June 2021, the new warnings will feature textual statements with colour images depicting some of the serious but lesser-known health risks of cigarette smoking, such as cardiac disease or diabetes. The health warnings will appear prominently on cigarette packages and advertisements, occupying the top 50% of the area of the front and rear panels of cigarette packages and at least 20% of the area at the top of cigarette advertisements.
