The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has published updated guidance that paves the way for the prescribing of medicinally licensed e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. Tobacco companies can approach the agency to submit their products to go through the same regulatory approvals process as other prescription medicines. If a product receives an approval from the agency, doctors can then decide on a case-by-case basis whether it would be appropriate to prescribe e-cigarettes to patients to help them quit smoking. However, it remains the case that non-smokers and children are strongly advised against using e-cigarettes.

Hong Kong lawmakers passed a bill banning the sale of electronic cigarettes.
