Following an amendment to the Tourism Act that was passed by Hungary’s parliament in 2021, a new unified star rating system became mandatory for all types of lodging in the country from the beginning of 2022. Already in use in over 10 countries and reminiscent of the Hotelstars Union standards that were adopted in several European markets in 2010, this system awards hotels and other facilities – including short-term rentals – a rating of between one and five stars based on uniform criteria.
With inbound and domestic tourism flows in Hungary anticipated to remain buoyant, lodging current value sales look set to grow at robust rates throughout the forecast period, with all categories projected to record consistently positive results in this respect. In contrast, the total number of lodging outlets in the country is expected to decline.

Lodging (Destination)
Lodging (Destination) covers the main types of lodging used by inbound and domestic tourists, providing a destination point of view (also known as point of supply). Lodging value is measured in terms of the price paid for lodging by the consumer and businesses based on total room sales. It does not include food and drinks or any other form of revenue that is not directly related to lodging, such as events and conferences and guest services, such as gym, spa, shop, room service, restaurant and café. Lodging volume is measured in terms of number of outlets and rooms at year end, and room nights as total of the full year.
