The global economic outlook has worsened since the start of the war in Ukraine and the imposition of major economic sanctions on Russia at the end of February 2022. In Euromonitor International’s Q2 2022 baseline forecasts, global real GDP annual growth is revised downward to 3.1% in 2022 (with a range of 2.0-4.0%), 1.2 percentage points lower than the Q1 2022 forecast.
Global inflation has faced additional upward pressures since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine due to supply cuts, added volatility and rising energy, food and commodity prices. Though the war will also dampen some inflationary pressures due to lower private sector confidence and spending, overall global inflation is forecast to accelerate in 2022-2023. Under the baseline scenario, global inflation is expected to reach 7.6% in 2022 (with a range of 6.3-8.8%) and towards 5.1% in 2023 (with a range of 3.6-6.6%), compared to 2001-2019 average annual global inflation of 3.8%. Many key economies, including the US, UK and those in the Eurozone would see highest inflation level in decades in 2022.
With inflation forecast to stay at elevated levels in 2022-2023, consumers and businesses in both emerging and developed economies will increasingly feel the squeeze of the rising prices. Higher prices will also add more pressures on the profit margins of businesses.
