Economic recovery underway

The fact that the Taiwanese economy has started to recover had a major impact on travel and tourism in 2010, with the number of domestic holiday makers and inbound arrivals increasing substantially. Nevertheless, despite rising consumer confidence and spending power, price competition remains key to stimulating sales for many tourism operators.

Number of holidaymakers to and from China continues to increase rapidly

The number of Taiwanese consumers visiting China and the number of inbound arrivals from the country continued to increase rapidly during 2010. Close cultural links and proximity as well as the increasing number of China–Taiwan flight routes are making cross strait travel increasingly popular. China is the largest source of inbound arrivals to Taiwan and amongst the fastest growing source markets. Arrivals from China have helped to stimulate tourism expenditure around key attractions and will continue to do so beyond 2010.

Taiwan High Speed Rail continues to impact tourism

Taiwan High Speed Rail has now been operating for four years and continues to make a substantial impact on the tourism industry and transport operators in particular. In response, many operators within competing transport areas have now begun to transform their operations, offering services that are complementary to Taiwan High Speed Rail or moving into areas that do not compete directly with the rail operator while also focusing on becoming leaner and more efficient. In addition, Taiwan High Speed Rail stations are also playing an increasingly important role as regional transport hubs.

AirAsia boosts traffic to and from Malaysia

Despite being the third low cost carrier to enter Taiwan, AirAsia has achieved much greater success than its rivals regarding number of passengers carried. The success of the airline has helped to boost arrivals from Malaysia while at the same time increasing the number of Taiwanese people visiting Malaysia.

More diverse offerings expected with full economic recovery

Taiwan’s economy will continue to recover and is expected to record fairly healthy GDP growth over the coming years. Economic recovery will help tourism service and product providers to focus on specific consumer needs and allow firms to move away from competing purely on price in low margin areas. As a result, a wider range of products and services that cater to all budgets, interests, and needs is expected to develop over the forecast period.

  • Taiwan’s car rental segment remains small and underdeveloped. The area has faced numerous hurdles, with growth being limited by Taiwan’s small size and extensive rail and bus network. In addition, declining consumer purchasing power has also resulted in a decline in demand for rental cars in recent years.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The two leading car rental players accounted for 23% of Taiwan’s total national fleet and 33% of total retail value sales in 2010. Despite a certain degree of consolidation over the past year, the remainder of the industry continues to be highly fragmented. More than 85% of smaller operators maintain a fleet size of less than 20 vehicles and continue to suffer from the slow economic recovery.

  • The Taiwanese car rental segment will remain small and underdeveloped over the forecast period. Demand is likely to be further dampened by rising consumer interest in domestic tour packages and leisure and business rental sales will continue to decline in the short term.

With the exception of other spas, spas and hot springs are mainly located in mountain regions, especially in central and northern Taiwan. These businesses benefited from the decline in overseas holiday taking in 2009 as a result of the economic downturn. Domestic holiday taking has increased and personal treats such as spas and hot springs continued to increase in popularity during 2009 and 2010.

  • Health and wellness has a projected forecast period constant retail value CAGR of 4%. Due to its small sales base and recent identification as an opportunity area by both the government and industry players, medical tourism will continue to develop rapidly over the coming years and will lead growth, with constant retail value sales projected to increase at an average annual rate of 39%. However, medical tourism sales will remain limited in comparison with those in other health and wellness tourism areas due to its more limited target base and competition from nearby regions.

  • Although there has been an increase in consumer confidence and purchasing power, domestic tourism flows have continued to decline. The highly efficient nature of Taiwan’s transportation network, which allows for quick trips to anywhere on the Taiwan High Speed Rail line, as well as the success of the Taiwan Tour Bus and Taiwan Trip government schemes, has resulted in an increase in day return travel and a consequent decline in demand for overnight stays.

  • Transportation sales were boosted by rising demand amongst both domestic consumers and overseas holiday makers during 2010. Following a tough year in 2009, when companies responded to weak consumer purchasing power via intense price competition, demand recovered to pre-2009 levels in 2010.

  • Transportation constant retail value sales are projected to increase by a total of 27% over the forecast period. Air transport will continue to lead sales and will record total constant retail value growth of 30%.   • In 2010, hotels accounted for just 16% of the total number of travel accommodation outlets in Taiwan yet accounted for 92% of travel accommodation current retail value sales. The average hotel occupancy rate increased to 67% in 2010, up from 63% in 2009 and just under 65% in 2008. Operators continued to offer discounts in order to encourage holiday taking and to stimulate sales in 2010.

  • The leading 10 hotel groups in Taiwan accounted for 32 of Taiwan’s 110 tourist hotels in 2010. Combined, these hotels have a total of 9,620 rooms and accounted for half of all tourist hotel retail value sales in 2010.

  • Growth in hotel outlet numbers will continue to be impacted by the small size of Taiwan, restricted land availability in major cities, and tougher regulations. Large inbound flows of Chinese tourists will fuel hotel room and outlet growth over the forecast period. Whilst room number growth will most likely be moderate compared to that recorded over the review period, strong value growth is expected. Demand from arrivals from China in addition to increasing purchasing power amongst locals will be the key driving factors over the coming years.

  • Travel retail products remains highly fragmented in Taiwan. Overall, there are only a handful of medium to large retailers and numerous smaller operators. The leading companies in 2010 were Lion Travel Service, South East Travel Service, and Cola Tours Group which accounted for a combined retail value share of 30%. During the review period, there was a shift towards consolidation within travel retail products – a development that resulted in better service levels and an increase in the number of players with nationwide presence. The economic downturn in 2009 resulted in little differentiation in product offerings amongst all players and despite the improvement in the economy in 2010, there was minimal expansion in the product ranges offered by travel retailers.

PROSPECTS

  • Travel retail in Taiwan is highly developed and scope for further expansion is limited. At the same time, some small to medium players are offering increasingly sophisticated online services similar to those of many larger players while the product portfolios of companies are becoming increasingly similar and differentiation is becoming more and more different. In the long term, retail players will focus on creating and maintaining brand loyalty or offering more highly specialised products and services.

In building our composite industry view, we engage with a variety of personnel in key players at all points of the supply chain: materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service operators. Our objective is to engage in conversation with trade sources in which we exchange ideas and views on the industry, sharing our work-in-progress findings on supply/demand dynamics and potential. Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

At a country level, in line with local reporting requirements, we access annual accounts, national-specific company databases and local company websites. These are all invaluable sources as we build a view of each domestic player’s size and position within very specific categories of the industry.

Forecasts

Data projections and future performance analysis are key elements of Euromonitor International’s market intelligence. Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.
