Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy, meat recorded a total volume decline of 2% in 2020, compared to 1% growth in 2019. This was the result of the closure of foodservice industries and institutions from March 2020, when the government installed the first lockdown period.
Lockdown periods and ongoing home seclusion led to heightened growth for retail sales in 2020, which recorded 7% volume growth compared to 1% in 2019. Due to heightened time spent within the home, the demand for food for home consumption increased, including meat.
Following an uplift in growth for retail sales due to the outbreak of COVID-19, in 2021, retail growth is set to decline, with foodservice and the institutional growth impacting retail sales. Institutional and foodservice volume growth will both be double-digit in 2021, with total volume growth remaining positive for the full forecast period.
Across the forecast period, trends in meat consumption will focus on animal welfare, organic offerings and those free from antibiotics; all of which were popular over the review period and prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. While trends such as organic took a dip during 2020, when more focus was given to affordability, the trend is set to increase once more over the coming years.
