In 2020, demand for meat through foodservice and institutional channels dropped drastically as a result of the lockdown in the United Arab Emirates, as consumers turned to home seclusion to reduce their risk of exposure to the virus, thus leading to greater uptake of meat through retail. As lockdown measures gradually relaxed, and as consumer foodservice started to witness a revival, so did overall demand for meat through this channel in addition to institutions due to greater mobility as local consumers resumed eating outside of the home as a result of pent-up demand.
The pandemic created a shift in terms of distribution channels, which reached its peak during the lockdown period and was partially maintained until the end of 2020. More specifically, home seclusion encouraged higher online sales of meat, which enabled local consumers to avoid any physical contact with others in store-based grocery channels, and leading to loss of share for the latter.
Demand for meat in the United Arab Emirates is expected to further increase across all channels over the forecast period, in line with greater mobility and the likelihood of improving tourism as the threat of the pandemic wanes, especially as foodservice comprises a relevant share of volume sales. The health and wellness trend is also likely to become increasingly widespread to penetrate meat.
Holding the highest retail volume and value share within meat in the United Arab Emirates, the further development of poultry will be beneficial to the category as a whole moving forward. Due to the increased number of players in both meat and poultry, as well as the general growing trend of promotions, frozen poultry is constantly on promotion, which has potential to offset the premiumisation of fresh poultry.
