  • Fast food current value sales in Spain grew by 1% in 2012. Sales did not share the same fate as the bulk of the Spanish consumer foodservice market. Nevertheless, the deep economic crisis is influencing sales in the category. The fact that the unit price of items in the menu is traditionally lower through these outlets is supporting its positive performance.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The Spanish fast food market keeps showing a high degree of concentration with the leading four chained fast food companies, McDonald’s Corp, Burger King Holdings and Agrolimen and Rodilla Sanchez accounting for 55% of outlets and 77% of value sales in 2012 at GBO level.

PROSPECTS

  • According to Spanish government and some international organisations such as the EU and the IMF, it will not be until 2014 is well advanced that the Spanish economy will see the light at the end of the tunnel; its GDP is expected to see positive growth rates by then. If this prospect is realised, it will play a positive role in fast food performance as the slow economic recovery will deter Spaniards from visiting expensive full-service restaurants to the benefit of fast food ones. Consequently, constant value sales of fast food outlets will grow by 2% and post a marginally positive CAGR of 0.4% over the forecast period.
