Fish and seafood sales declined in 2021 in both retail and foodservice channels and in both volume and value terms. The volume decline was stronger in foodservice, the smaller channel which prior to the onset of COVID-19 was a slightly larger source of demand for fish and seafood than retail.
In Thailand, ongoing infection seems to be prolonged with the second and third waves of COVID-19 that have caused the deaths of hundreds of people and more than 10,000 infected cases a day. Concerns have been rising about some of the clusters in public places including those found present in many wet markets including the seafood wholesale markets.
COVID-19's impacts such as the government's strict virus control measures, sluggish tourism and recession in 2020 all slowed down the recovery rate of fish and seafood in 2021. The volume sales recovery of fish and seafood to pre-pandemic levels is not expected to be achieved until 2025 at the earliest.
