Cyclone Amphan which hit the eastern coast of India early in 2020, damaged dams, inundated areas with salty water which killed freshwater fish such as katla and rohu. The cyclone affected several hundred thousand people associated with pisciculture as it triggered heavy waves of coastal salt water to infiltrate the ponds and other waterbodies used for fish farming.
The PM Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) was launched on 10 September 2020 in 21 states with INR20,050 crore budget to be spent until FY2024-2025. The PM also launched e-Gopala App - a comprehensive breed improvement marketplace and information portal for direct use by farmers.
