Charge cards remained the smallest category within financial cards in Portugal at the end of the review period, dominated by commercial cards. The category is comprised of a low number of issuers which grant business clients a charge card and target companies or entrepreneurs that have employees who consistently make payments for business-related services and expenses, and want to control costs in addition to benefiting from interest-free credit periods.
While charge cards had recorded a positive performance prior to the emergence of the pandemic, it was already starting to see a notable slowdown in terms of growth in the number of cards being issued and transaction growth, as the category experienced increasing competition from credit cards and pre-paid cards; issuers were becoming more interested in these forms of financial cards towards the end of the review period as they offered greater profitability.
Charge cards remained a highly consolidated competitive landscape in terms of issuers in 2019, with Banco Santander Totta regaining leadership from Banco Comercial Português SA in terms of transaction value while the latter continued to lead in number of cards in circulation. Banco Comercial Português enjoys a strong client base with a portfolio offering three charge cards: Visa Corporate Silver and Visa Corporate Gold which offer more comprehensive associated insurance, and TAP Visa Business which grants its cardholders a sign-up bonus of 4,000 miles in addition to an extra 1,000 miles per EUR5,000 spent as well as travel benefits.
