Similar to credit cards, charge cards in Germany continued to post strong growth in terms of transaction volume and value as well as cards in circulation in 2019. While showing a still significant gap to debit cards, charge cards recorded considerably higher usage compared to credit cards.
The expected strong growth in the number of charge cards in circulation and transactions in terms of volume and value over the forecast period lead to the question whether charge cards will be able to challenge debit cards in Germany regarding everyday usage. Lower card fees for merchants resulting from EU regulations have already led to higher acceptance, including at leading discounters and other retailers which in turn is resulting in growing consumer expectations regarding acceptance at other outlets.
In recent years, charge cards have been increasingly influential in the German payment landscape, driven by the growth of e-commerce and the emergence of mobile payments. The latter was especially fuelled by the market entry of Apple Pay in Germany in late 2018.
In 2018, Visa posted strong growth in Germany in both transactions and cards in circulation within charge cards. The high brand awareness among consumers is currently further supported by the most significant marketing campaign for the German market in its history.
Due to their large customer base, the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV) and the National Association of Cooperative Banks (BVR) were in a strong position in 2018 to benefit from the rising consumer interest in charge cards, offering customers attractive conditions while linking charge cards to their existing accounts. Thereby, both associations were able to expand their positions as the leading and second leading issuers, respectively.
In Germany, commercial charge cards are the most significant commercial financial cards in terms of prevalence and transaction value. In 2018, Lufthansa AirPlus Servicekarten further expanded its strong lead in both regards.
