2025 Developments
Nicotine in Slovakia continued to decline in 2025, as falling smoking prevalence, economic pressure and growing consumer interest in alternative nicotine products reshaped demand across the market. Cigarettes and cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco recorded the steepest declines, while smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco proved more resilient. Despite lower volumes, consumer expenditure on tobacco increased as higher taxes continued to support value growth. Declining smoking prevalence remained the dominant force shaping market performance. Growing health awareness, rising costs and the increasing social acceptance of alternatives continued to reduce the traditional smoker base. Many consumers shifted towards alternative nicotine products rather than leaving cigarettes entirely, contributing to increasingly flexible and occasion-driven nicotine consumption patterns. Alternative nicotine products continued to strengthen their position through product innovation, broader consumer appeal and perceived reduced-harm benefits. Heated tobacco, nicotine pouches and e-vapour products benefited from stronger innovation pipelines, greater marketing flexibility and expanding distribution. New launches such as Fuyl, alongside the continued performance of brands including Pablo and Elf Bar, highlighted the growing importance of alternatives within the nicotine landscape. The market remained highly concentrated, although competition intensified as alternative nicotine formats gradually gained share. Philip Morris Slovakia sro maintained its leadership through the strength of Marlboro, L&M and IQOS, while tobacco specialists and supermarkets remained central to nicotine distribution. Other non-grocery retailers continued to lead e-vapour product sales, and e-commerce remained an important channel for vaping products, e-liquids and nicotine pouches, while traditional smoking products remained restricted to offline retail. Looking ahead, overall nicotine volumes are projected to continue declining as excise increases, regulatory tightening and demographic shifts place further pressure on consumption. Growth opportunities are expected to remain concentrated in alternative nicotine formats, increasing the importance of portfolio diversification, innovation and regulatory adaptability.
