Demand for dairy packaging grew at its fastest rate in well over a decade during 2020. As a result of lockdown measures, consumers spent more time at home during the year and prepared and ate more meals there.
After drinking milk products, yoghurt is the next biggest source of demand for packaging in dairy products. There are only two pack types in yoghurt: HDPE bottles and thin wall plastic containers.
There was strong growth in demand for milk alternatives packaging in Mexico during the review period – albeit from a relatively small base – and this trend was not disrupted by the pandemic. The economic impact of COVID-19 and its restrictions may have led some consumers to reduce their spending in some areas of groceries, but milk alternatives are mainly purchased by more affluent people, who are less price sensitive.
Milk alternatives, driven by almond and coconut products, was recording dynamic growth in its packaging unit volumes during the pandemic (2020, 2021) and is expected to continue seeing strong growth over the forecast period. This will be in line with growing health trends, in addition to lifestyle changes, with an increasing number of Mexicans moving away from animal-based products by reducing their consumption of dairy, and concerns about production processes and the sustainability of the dairy industry.
Aluminium/plastic pouches will grow in popularity in dairy packaging over the course of the forecast period, largely due to their convenience. Mexico is urbanising rapidly and consumer lifestyles are accelerating.
