Nuts are priced at a premium in South Africa

With the exception of peanuts, nuts are extremely expensive in South Africa. This is due to the majority of nuts being imports (apart from pecans and macadamia nuts which are locally grown).

Peanuts set to remain the largest nuts category

2018 saw peanuts remain the largest nuts category. Peanuts are particularly popular among low and middle LSM consumers and this is due to their low unit prices, particularly in comparison with other types of nuts.

Strong growth in other nuts due mainly to popularity of macadamias and pecans

Other nuts is set to continue registering strong growth over the forecast period and this is mainly due to the rising interest in pecans and macadamias among middle and upper LSM consumers. These nuts are locally grown and this means that local consumers have access to a wide range of high-quality macadamias and pecans at reasonable prices, although some of these nuts are still imported.
