Within eggs, traceability and local origin (French) has become pre-eminent to French consumers, with a new logo “Eggs of France” being launched in April 2018 in a bid to assuage concerns. This guarantees that eggs are 100% “Made in France” and provides transparent information relating to hatcheries, pullet breeders, layer hen farmers, egg packaging and processing centres.
Concerns over breeding conditions and animal welfare have risen to prominence since animal rights organisation L214 publicised videos showing the living conditions of battery hens. Although the industry has committed to ensuring that 50% (from 32%) of eggs come from ‘alternative’ sources by 2022 (ie move around 10 million hens from cages to full air or aviary breeding grounds), demand from retailers, caterers and processors is outpacing these efforts.
Eggs from alternative farms are the drivers of sales growth as French consumers demand higher standards, along with increased awareness of breeding conditions and desire for French produce. As a result, over the coming years, sales of Label Rouge and organic eggs will continue to grow strongly.
