During the initial lockdown implemented by the government in March 2020, consumers increased the amount of cooking done within the home, boosting sales of eggs. In addition, consumers looked for activities and way to keep themselves occupied while staying within the household, and this led to an increased interest in baking.
Free-range eggs registered the strongest volume growth during Q1 of 2020, followed by outdoor-raised hens. These reflected the growing interest and attention given to animal welfare in Italy, as well as rising concerns on antibiotics content, with food safety concerns rising due to the outbreak of COVID-19, and the focus given on health and safety.
Eggs continued to post positive total volume growth in 2020, despite the outbreak of COVID-19, and therefore, growth is set to increase further in 2021 and 2022, as the foodservice industry and institutions recover. Eggs will continue to benefit from its alignment to health and wellness, as well as its offering of a low-priced quality source of protein, important during the economic recession, and during a time of heightened interest in health and wellness.
Over the lockdown period, sales through e-commerce increased in Italy, with consumers appreciating a safer form of retailing that allowed them to order from home, before having deliveries sent directly to the household. This allowed consumers to stay at home and was particularly appreciated by older consumers, and those more vulnerable to the virus.
