Competitive Landscape
Amazon Strengthens Logistics and Loyalty to Outpace Rivals
Retail e-commerce in Japan is notably concentrated, with Amazon Japan and Rakuten Group Inc together commanding a combined value share of 54% in 2025. The next largest competitor, Japan Consumers Cooperative Union, trailed behind with a value share of 11% in 2025.
Temu Is Making Inroads, but Established E-Commerce Titans Hold Steady
Despite the entry of new platforms such as Shein, Temu, and TikTok Shop, there has been no significant disruption to the shares of established players. New entrants have struggled to match the scale, variety, and cultural fit offered by Amazon and Rakuten, whose success is anchored in broad assortments, trusted delivery, strong customer service, and highly localised reward systems.
