While consumers’ increasing penchant for travel and other out-of-home experiences prior to the onset of the pandemic had lifted bags and luggage to strong growth over 2016-2019, the category was among the worst hit in 2020 as lockdowns, travel restrictions, and other efforts to curtail the spread of the virus, including the expansion of remote work and e-learning, as well as additional hygiene and social distancing measures in stores, deeply depressed demand throughout much of the year. Among the worst hit product categories in 2020 were those primarily used for school, work, or travel, including backpacks, business bags, duffel bags, and luggage.
Although international and domestic travel restrictions, stay-at-home orders, and other changes in consumer lifestyles brought on by the pandemic hurt sales of travel bags, more everyday and versatile bags, including both non-luxury and luxury handbags, as well as crossbody bags and other small bags, performed better in 2020 and into 2021. This was thanks in large part to their usefulness during more local and socially distant activities, including neighbourhood walks and dining out (with masks), which consumers were quick to resume when able to do so, especially as larger group activities remained restricted.
With the majority of bags and luggage sales having occurred through store-based retail channels including bags and luggage specialist retailers, apparel and footwear specialist retailers, and department stores prior to the pandemic, many consumers found themselves either unable or unwilling to purchase their preferred products and brands in-stores throughout much of 2020 and the first half of 2021 amid COVID-19 restrictions, which varied across states. As a result, e-commerce experienced a dramatic boost in its share of total bags and luggage sales in 2020, which although receded slightly in 2021 as in-store shopping began to normalise, still remains far above pre-pandemic levels, and is expected to remain as such moving forward while continuing to grow.
As consumers, led by the youngest generations, were increasingly prioritising spending on out-of-home experiences including travel, dining out, and attending music festivals prior to the onset of COVID-19, bags and luggage had been one of the few product categories benefitting from the shift as consumers chose durable and versatile, but also stylish, bags to take with them. As pandemic restrictions eased during summer 2020 and again in spring 2021 before being largely eliminated by summer 2021 in most states, consumers were quick to resume local activities and domestic travel, delivering a promising boost to bags and luggage across categories.
Interest in the resale market is one among a number of consumer trends that have come to the forefront amid the pandemic. Offering environmental merits and the opportunity to buy authentic, luxury handbags and other leather goods for more affordable prices, the resale market has been growing in popularity in recent years.
As many consumers’ only available, or otherwise vastly preferred, sales channel for bags and luggage throughout much of 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19-related restrictions, dramatic growth in the category’s e-commerce penetration came as many consumers became increasingly comfortable shopping for and purchasing items of increasingly high-value entirely online, with some doing so for the first time. As a result, brands and retailers have been increasingly investing in new digital sales and marketing tactics, such as video-based styling and personal shopping appointments, livestream shopping events, and virtual stores, fitting rooms, and products, as well as curbside pick-up at stores, to facilitate e-commerce sales.
