Bags and luggage was significantly disrupted by the pandemic in 2020, with the international travel restrictions dampening both purchasing and usage occasions significantly. In 2021, the same trends will continue to restrict the growth of bags and luggage as travel restrictions are not projected to be eased until late 2021.
While luggage continues to see lower levels of demand in 2021, other products such as bags are set to experience a positive effect from changes in consumer purchasing patterns as a result of the pandemic. Indeed, increased levels of working-from home, less frequent travel between the home and office, and more localized domestic travel are expected to contribute to demand for messenger bags (crossbody bags), backpacks as well as duffel bags.
Handbags has seen some changes in terms of what features attract consumers in 2021. In handbags, functional and larger bags which are more suited for modern pandemic lifestyles with ample room for a smartphone as well as personal cleaning products such as hand sanitizer continue to be in-trend.
Bags and luggage is set to see even stronger current value growth in 2022, before demand normalises and growth rates gradually slow over the forecast period. In the case of luggage, it is projected to see a slower recovery period due to international travel restrictions, with current value growth projected to increase until 2023 before seeing a normalisation in demand.
As luggage takes a back seat in consumers’ lives in the short-term, functional bags are set to pick up some of the lost momentum in the beginning of the forecast period. Indeed, functional bags offering utility for local travel and weekend trips, such as duffel bags and backpacks, are expected to benefit from the lack of international travel, as well as less frequent commutes to the office and more remote work.
In the latter half of the forecast period once the immediate pandemic worries dissipate from consumers’ minds, sustainability will return to being a key trend influencing the development of bags and luggage. Canadian brands such as Mariclaro Designs are producing bags from recycled materials, such as Mariclaro’s ZEIT.
