While the current growth rate is expected to be in the double-digits in 2021, the growth in current value comes after a disastrous 2020, when value sales declined by over a fifth. Though a recovery is expected in 2021, current value sales are not expected to reach pre-pandemic levels.
Domestic player Wittchen maintained its leadership position in bags and luggage, a position the company has held over many years. However, bags and luggage remains highly fragmented and very competitive, and no single player holds a commanding value share, although there are players with strengths in various subgroups.
There is expected to further development of e-commerce in 2021. After unprecedented growth in 2020, consumers are now much more comfortable with the idea of buying bags and luggage online and with COVID-19 infections remaining high well into 2021, with lockdown restrictions reimposed, it is expected that a significant proportion of value sales will continue to be online.
The pace of the recovery will depend on how quickly the pandemic is brought under control. However, the products area that will likely recover quickest will be causal bags, that could potentially reach pre pandemic value sales levels by the end of 2021.
While bags, particularly handbags, are generally considered to be functional and practical items, they are nevertheless also considered by many to be fashion items and, prior to the pandemic, items for which many consumers had been willing to spend more if they were stylish. However, this trend is expected to weaken somewhat as anticipated elevated price-sensitivity, brought about by the pandemic, will have an effect over the forecast period, convincing some consumers to place less of an emphasis on fashion and a more of an emphasis on affordability.
The pandemic accelerated the migration to the online channel, which had already been growing. E-commerce will continue to grow as customers have become accustomed to this form of shopping, and it is the primary channel for the younger generation of customers.
