Potatoes remains the mainstay of starchy roots

Fresh potatoes accounted for the majority of volume sales of starchy roots in 2018 and continued to achieve positive growth. Consumption was favoured both by convenient retail unit prices which in turn were stimulated by a drop in manufacturing prices given the positive production campaigns around fresh potatoes in Italy.

Rising demand for other roots and sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes and other roots such as beetroot and fresh turnips, turnip green or celeriac performed positively in 2018. There continued to be a growing trend for “forgotten” roots such as parsnips with beetroot also enjoying a resurgence, thanks to its use in salads.

Increasing scope for organic ranges

The forecast period is set to witness a stable performance of starchy roots overall, with industry players increasing their offer of packaged fresh products and frozen unprocessed products as consumers will be wiling to pay more for good quality and convenience, with this trend having a minor negative impact on sales of fresh raw potatoes. This trend will also bode well for organic and quality-sealed production, especially when consumers come to understand the quality and the importance of high-standard products, with organic offerings providing producers with an opportunity to innovate.
