The price of fresh vegetables can vary a great deal depending on the season, the region and the distribution channel through which they are sold. Prices are also determined by the number of intermediaries which transport and handle the products, each of which adds to the cost of the product.

Packaging developments enable more efficient consumption

The handling and distribution of fresh vegetables is challenging in many ways, as these products have a short shelf life. In addition, there are some vegetables that need careful handling and specific storage conditions to ensure their good condition and a profitable life cycle.

Trade policies are expected to continue driving growth

Over the review period, there were ongoing negotiations between Canada, the US and Mexico about updating the North America Free Trade Agreement. A sensitive issue was that the US wanted to impose seasonal restrictions on imports of fruits and vegetables, which could have significantly affected Mexican producers.
