There was a slight increase in demand for confectionery packaging unit volumes in 2021, but it was slower than the decline seen a year earlier in 2020. Confectionery consumption was impacted by consumers spending more time at home due to COVID-19 in 2020, thereby reducing levels of on-the-go/impulse purchases, while rising consumer awareness of health and wellness is also a negative factor for this category’s products.
The packaging unit volumes of flexible plastic used in sugar confectionery recorded a marked decline in 2020 before seeing negligible growth in 2021. This could be because of the prevalence of pick ‘n’ mix in sugar confectionery in Sweden.
Sweden is somewhat unusual because most gum sold in the country only has a single layer of packaging. Leading brands Extra, Stimorol and V6 are primarily sold in zip-lock bags made from flexible packaging, with a standard size of 35g.
A growing number of manufacturers are likely to move away from single-use plastics during the forecast period. Cleotta, the leading chocolate confectionery brand, aims to achieve 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 and to use no packaging materials that are not made from renewable materials by 2030.
Demand for overall confectionery packaging will be weak over the forecast period, negatively impacted by increasing health awareness, as Swedes become more aware of the health risks associated with high levels of sugar consumption. While flexible plastic is expected to remain the most widely used pack type in confectionery, the share of sustainable alternatives like flexible paper and recyclable PET jars in likely to increase, particularly for sugar confectionery, boxed assortments and gum.
