While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was positive for many packaged food categories, this did not apply to confectionery as sales in the category came under massive pressure during 2020, which was continuing into 2021. The main reason for this is that most local consumers resolved to take a strict approach to social distancing and home seclusion in an effort to avoid coming into contact with the COVID-19 virus and also to support efforts to bring the spread of the virus under control.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, chocolate confectionery has continued to record positive growth. The category’s ability to ride the storm better than other areas of snacks is partly down to the efforts of leading player Universal Robina Corp, which not only offers affordable products but has also taken steps to ensure there have been no significant supply shortages seen for its products during 2020 and 2021.
Flexible plastic continues to be the dominant pack type used in confectionery packaging. Flexible plastic is by far the most widely used pack type across chocolate confectionery, gum and sugar confectionery – and this applies to both imported and local brands.
Chocolate confectionery is expected to record strong performances in the coming years, as it is still seen as having plenty of room to grow so that, once COVID-19 is brought under control and the country’s economy starts to recover, this should be reflected in strong gains for chocolate confectionery. Increasing product offerings and more affordable prices in tablets and contlines are expected to bolster demand.
It is expected that flexible plastic will remain the dominant pack type in confectionery in the Philippines during the forecast period. While the use of flexible plastic is virtually ubiquitous among sugar confectionery brands, in gum brands such as Mentos are likely to continue with the practice of individually wrapping pieces of gum contained within larger packs so as to ensure that the brand remains suitable for “tingi” (per unit) sales via sari-sari stores.
