Demand for processed fruit and vegetables packaging units expanded at its fastest rate in almost a decade during 2020, as COVID-19 led to consumers spending more time at home and preparing and eating more meals there. Shelf stable products are much more popular than frozen products in processed fruit and vegetables due to their relatively low cost, and in a difficult economic environment, they significantly outperformed their frozen counterparts during the review period.
Flexible plastic remained the dominant pack type for frozen processed fruit and vegetables in 2020. During the review period, thin wall plastic containers grew in popularity in frozen processed fruit and vegetables at the expense of both flexible plastic and folding cartons.
During the review period, plastic pouches grew in popularity in shelf stable fruit and vegetables, albeit from quite a low base, and this pack type is also making inroads into frozen fruit, with such brands such as Frenzy from Zhytomyrsky Maslozavod VAT launching smoothie mixes to which water and yoghurt are added before consumption. There are also frozen vitamin mixes containing fruit and herbs that only need some hot water to be ready for consumption.
The rate of growth in demand for processed fruit and vegetables packaging will slow significantly during 2021. As the threat posed by COVID-19 begins to fade and daily life normalises, consumers will spend less time at home and prepare and eat fewer meals there.
While flexible plastic will remain the leading pack type in frozen processed fruit and vegetables during the forecast period, thin wall plastic containers will continue to grow in importance. While flexible plastic is the cheapest type of packaging for these products, thin wall plastic containers are more convenient, in addition to being both more robust and reusable.
