The main competition within pulses is linked to pricing, with leading players lowering their unit prices through promotional activity in an attempt to maintain sales among price-sensitive consumers. In addition, private label players are offering similar ranges as they address the leading trends and ensure unit prices remain affordable.
In addition to benefitting from affordability and versatility, pulses is expected to see further demand, driven by the trend to reduce meat consumption, as an increasing number of South Africans opt for more plant-based diets over the forecast period. Local consumers are increasingly adopting vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian diets as a result of rising health awareness, increasing eco-consciousness and concerns for animal welfare.

Pulses
This category is limited to leguminous crops harvested only for dry grains, excluding crops harvested green for food (green peas, green bean, string beans, etc), which are considered to be vegetables and are included in other vegetables category. Also exclude those used mainly for the extraction of oil (eg soybeans) and those leguminous crops such as clover and alfalfa, which seeds are almost used exclusively for sowing purpose.
