Pulses are a very accessible and traditional ingredient for home cooking. Beans, chickpeas and lentils are the stars of many Spanish specialities, such as Caldo, Fabada Asturiana and Gaspacho Manchego.
Private label constantly gained share over the early to middle part of the review period thanks to the lower prices of these products, gaining dominance in the category. However, these products did not perform as well in 2020, since consumers showed more trust in manufacturers’ brands, and this trend continued in 2021.
A positive total volume performance is expected for pulses during the forecast period, due to the popularity of these products, particularly lentils, chickpeas and beans, in the Spanish cuisine. It is worth mentioning that today the consumption of pulses is not limited to traditional stews and caldero, now these are considered fancy ingredients that have a presence in different menus: from salads and hummus to hamburgers.
Pulses is also set to see growth across all channels as consumers perceive these as healthy. The reduction in meat consumption in particular will continue to drive growth in pulses as vegetarians and flexitarians use pulses as an alternative source of protein.
