Brazilians’ exposure to the high levels of sugar, fat and salt in packaged food has been heightened following the introduction of new legislation in the country. As of October 2022, Brazilian legislation regarding the need to declare excesses of harmful ingredients (such as sugar, sodium and fat) on product packaging came into force, a food labelling standard already approved by Anvisa (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency) in 2020.
Dietary and free from health claims within staple foods, including gluten free, offer potential over the forecast period, driven by greater access to information on the effects and medical orientation regarding celiac restrictions. Along with wholegrain high fibre products, gluten free variants of staple foods are also sought by consumers targeting low carbohydrate high fat diets, despite medical concerns relating to weight gain.
Local consumers are not only becoming increasingly concerned about adopting the right dietary habits for themselves, but also with animal welfare and the impact of meat-based diets on the environment. As such, meat free, which is a dietary and free from type of health and wellness attribute, is anticipated to become more popular within staple foods over the forecast period.
