Numerous products in this category experienced considerable growth early on during the lockdowns as consumers invested more time cooking. The biggest winner was breadmakers, with the appliances offering novelty and fun amid home seclusion, and Canadians having more time to make bread.
The top four players remained relatively steady in small cooking appliances in retail volume terms in 2020. Black+Decker from Applica Canada Corp continued to lead, achieving volume sales growth that matched the category average.
While not as dynamic as in 2020, small cooking appliances saw another year of retail volume growth in 2019, although very different performances were seen among categories. Pod coffee machines experienced further decline due to reports on the negative environmental impact of non-reusable single-serve pods, and the strong decrease is expected to continue in the forecast period as sales normalise from the unexpected spike in demand prompted by lockdown measures.
Products that were popular at the start of lockdown measures such as breadmakers are likely to see a large decline in 2021, with replacements not necessary for many of the new owners for some time. However, the home cooking trend is predicted to remain over the forecast period, even as society reopens again, which will help small cooking appliances to secure slight volume sales growth overall although some categories will record declines, such as hard pods coffee machines and deep fat fryers, which will fall foul of sustainability and health trends respectively.
Canadians are steadily engaging in healthy eating and home cooking, but until 2020 remained sceptical about light fryers, or air fryers, with volume sales growth sluggish. Consumers have regard the air fryer as a substitute for deep frying, and most limited usage to the preparation of French fries – but many consumers are unwilling to pay a premium price for a light fryer simply to make French fries.
Although store-based sales continued to dominate in 2020, non-store retailing posted strong growth in small cooking appliances, whilst the volume share of store-based retailing declined slightly. This shift was due to the double-digit growth of e-commerce, with lockdown measures adversely affecting the distribution shares of specialist retailers and department stores, which had to close temporarily.
