Despite an increase in cooking at home seen across the country, most small cooking appliances are already present with UAE households, and as such, the rise in home seclusion did not lead to heightened sales in 2020. Slow cookers were one of the only areas to record positive growth, benefiting from home cooking; however, growth was stifled compared to 2019.
Despite an overall decline in growth for 2020, during the lockdown period from March, the demand for small cooking appliances slightly increased, with consumers staying at home rather than eating out, boosting sales. In addition, some consumers were also learning and working from home, creating office spaces within the household.
Traditionally, a significant part of sales for small cooking appliances comes from impulse purchases, with consumers visiting stores and seeing demonstrations, ordeals and discounts, with sales staff encouraging the purchases of these goods. With consumers spending a heightened amount of time in the home during 2020, visits to store significantly reduced, especially during lockdown periods when many were closed.
Across the forecast period, volume growth for small cooking appliances will recover in 2021, aligning to levels recorded pre-COVID-19, in 2019. From 2022, growth is set to increase further, driven by pod coffee machines.
Coffee machines, particularly hard pod machines, is set to drive the highest levels of volume growth across the forecast period. This will be driven by new players entering the category, and existing ones introducing new technology updates in their machines, as well as new coffee flavours.
E-commerce recorded an increase in share in 2020, aligned to consumers spending more time at home, and others being fearful of leaving the house, even to visit retailers that had safety measures in place. The dynamic growth recorded in 2020 will continue to grow across the forecast period, as a host of new users have adapted to the online channel.
