Executive Summary

Sep 2019
PROSPECTS
Domestic flight prices continue to fall

The price of domestic flights continued to fall in 2019, with the increase of competitiveness amongst airlines resulting in savings for travellers. In 2019, the government of Chile announced a plan to reduce different boarding fee charges at its national airports, in an effort to increase the appeal of domestic travel.

Low-cost model introduces price war among players

Since the transition of scheduled airline Sky to a low-cost format during 2016, the airline industry has had to quickly reinvent itself to compete with the low prices offered by this new format. The arrival of new players in the low-cost segment, such as ultra-low-cost airline JetSMART, has driven competitiveness, impacting scheduled airliners and forcing them to quickly adapt.

New routes for low cost airlines keep major players on their toes

In 2018, LATAM expanded its international destinations, adding routes for cities such as Lisbon, Boston and Tel Aviv-Yafo. The increase in supply allowed consumers to have a wider range of destinations and a greater variety of prices, resulting in a much more competitive market.
