Low cost carriers Wizz Air and Ryanair still the leading names in airlines

Europe’s leading low cost carriers remained in the leading positions in airlines in Bulgaria in 2019. Wizz Air maintains a decent lead over second-ranked Ryanair and these players continue to benefit from demand among a highly budget-conscious local population as well as value-oriented inbound travellers.

Favourable strategic location underpins growth in airlines

Bulgaria’s strategic location at one of the most important crossroads of Europe remains among the country’s key assets generally, including for its travel and tourism industry. With the country’s key air transport hub at Sofia Airport no more than a 3-hour flight from all of Europe’s major air transport hubs, Bulgaria is no more than one connection away from literally everywhere in the world.

Growth in arrivals motivates the redevelopment of Bulgaria’s airports

Considerable investment has been undertaken at Sofia Airport and Plovdiv in recent decades, with Sofia’s main terminal completed in 2006 and Plovdiv’s terminal opened in 2009. The reconstruction and massive expansion of Sofia airport also included a new runway and apron and, crucially, the construction of a new metro line linking the new main Terminal 2 with the central city within 40 minutes.
