2019 was another strong year for Ryanair, with an increase in both passenger numbers and revenue. Despite the commercial success, 2019 was also the most challenging for the airline.

Negative sentiment for Ryanair as it is announced as ‘the new coal’

Having previously been praised for their eco-friendly aircrafts, Ryanair received adverse publicity in 2019 when an EU report claimed that ‘Ryanair is the new coal’. The airline was the first non-coal company to be placed on the list of top 10 CO2 polluters in the EUAs.

Ryanair and Aer Lingus continue to dominate

Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus traditionally benefited from Irish brand nationalism. However, both operators innovated significantly in their respective fields in recent years to maintain their leading positions.
