PROSPECTS
Slowing rate of growth for airlines although some increased activity through smaller airports and by low cost carriers

Airlines in Romania remain a complex mix of domestic transportation for both leisure and business travel, and outbound departures, although the number of trips taken abroad by land still far outweigh those by air due to the high numbers of Romanians visiting friends and relatives in neighbouring countries. Despite carrying the lowest number of passengers, charter flights recorded a second consecutive year of impressive growth due to the increasing uptake in the number of package holidays by Romanians, led by Blue Air and Tarom, which both gained strong value share and recorded dynamic performances.

Romanian airlines cooperate to offer improved services for passengers

While overall airlines continued to be led by dominant Hungarian low cost carrier Wizz Air, which continued to gain value share from its competitors, there was notable consolidation with partnerships between local airlines. Two Romanian companies, the state-owned national flag carrier Tarom (leading scheduled carriers and also present in charter) and the private low cost carrier Blue Air (in addition to being the leading charter airline in Romania), signed agreements that enable their passengers to travel on each other’s flights “within the limitation of free seats” when required at no extra charge.

Ongoing infrastructure improvements to address increasing numbers of passengers

There is a continual need to improve infrastructure and modernise regional airports in Romania’s large cities, to address the increasing levels of both outbound tourists and inbound arrivals. Avram Iancu airport in Cluj-Napoca expanded with the opening of a new terminal and a new runway, increasing its passenger capacity, encouraging carriers such as Wizz Air to expand their routes such as the latter’s opening up of a new route between Cluj-Napoca and London Gatwick from the end of March 2019.
