Restrictions on the movement of people due to COVID-19 have affected airlines in Portugal on a large scale. The number of routes were reduced to a minimum in 2020, and in 2021 continue far from those reached in 2019, with companies facing major solvency problems.
To survive, airline companies have little choice but to adapt their business strategies and optimise their destination networks. In the early part of 2021, tourists have stayed relatively close to home when travelling away, not wanting to be masked on a plane for too long or fearing contagion on aeroplanes and at airports.
In the forecast period, in the face of ongoing crisis, it is expected that airline companies will continue to rely on alliances and partnerships, to be stronger together, with the airlines industry emerging from the crisis smaller and more cautious. Prices will be subject to contrary pressures, with the short-haul trend in the early part of the forecast period pushing unit prices down on schedule and charter flights, while increased health and hygiene measures and deep sanitation procedures will raise costs.
Over the forecast period, there will very likely be pressure for very short-haul flights to cease to exist. According to the Minister of Infrastructure, an air bridge between Lisbon and Porto is incompatible with the national railway development and modernisation.
