PROSPECTS
Opposite trends for low cost carriers and scheduled flights

Despite the emerging trend within other Nordic countries to replace air travel with land or rail due to environmental reasons, many Hungarians still appreciate the convenience and quicker travelling time to reach countries outside of the region. Therefore, outbound travel by air continued to record positive growth in 2019, although the growth rate for both business and leisure was slower compared to the previous year.

Ancillary costs from low cost carriers can lead to negative press although consumers appear to absorb them due to competitive flights

While low cost carriers continued to offer Hungarians competitive prices on flights and an expanding portfolio of destinations which allows them to enjoy more frequent trips abroad, the additional baggage fees (for checked-in luggage) and other surcharges such as seat allocation policies that low cost carriers apply generate negativity in the media and amongst customers. However, these extra charges are either absorbed due to the savings generally made compared to scheduled flights or can be addressed by taking carry-on luggage (especially for shorter weekend city breaks).

Night flight ban comes into force over Budapest

Greater attention to residents living in the vicinity of major airports is needed to sustain and support growth of inbound arrivals. With increases in inbound arrivals, particularly with higher traffic moving through Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport, concerns regarding overtourism due to the capital becoming increasingly crowded during the summer months and the noise pollution from night flights, which cause a great deal of stress to local residents, are highly topical.
