Demand for baby food packaging expanded at its fastest rate in well over a decade during 2020. Some parents purchased baby food in bulk due to fears of product shortages that might arise from pandemic-related supply-chain disruption, while others did so in order to make fewer shopping trips in an effort to limit their risk of contracting COVID-19.
Glass jars remains the dominant pack type for prepared baby food, particularly for larger pack sizes, where convenience is less of an issue. However, stand-up pouches with anti-choke plastic screw closures are a strongly emerging pack type, recording dynamic growth in prepared baby food – and other baby food – over the review period.
During the second half of the review period, Nestlé introduced metal tin packaging with a smooth surface and a holder for the measuring scoop inside the pack for its Nan powder milk formula. The holder ensures that the scoop does not lie directly on the powder milk formula, which is a more hygienic arrangement.
Packaging unit volumes of powder milk formula will record the strongest CAGR over 2021-2026, driven by the convenience trend and the lack of popularity in longer-term breastfeeding among Polish mothers, despite the efforts of various health organisations to promote its benefits. This will help drive the packaging unit volumes of flexible aluminium/plastic and metal tins used in the packaging of milk formula over the forecast period.
Urbanisation and accelerating consumer lifestyles will ensure that convenience continues to grow in importance as a factor in baby food purchasing decisions. This will continue to support growth in demand for stand-up pouches with plastic screw closures at the expense of glass jars in prepared baby food.
